Personnel of the Forward Operating Base (FOB) FORMOSO, in collaboration with troops of the Nigerian Army’s 5 Battalion, Elele, Rivers State, have arrested a suspected kingpin of a pipeline vandalism syndicate operating in parts of the Niger Delta.
The suspect, identified as Godwin, popularly known as “Idiot,” was apprehended during an intelligence-led operation carried out on April 25, 2026, at his residence in Egbama-Angalabiri, Ekeremor Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
According to military sources, the suspect is believed to be the leader of a notorious gang linked to repeated attacks on pipelines and other oil installations in Clough Creek and surrounding communities.
Also arrested during the operation was another suspect, identified simply as Happiness, who is alleged to be an accomplice.
Items recovered from the suspects include a pump-action rifle and two walkie-talkies, believed to have been used in coordinating illegal activities.
The operation followed a recent increase in incidents of pipeline vandalism and sabotage in the area, which have posed serious threats to oil production and economic activities in the Niger Delta.
The suspects and the recovered exhibits were subsequently handed over to the Bayelsa State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) on April 26 for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The successful operation underscores the determination of security agencies to rid the region of criminal elements and safeguard critical national assets, particularly oil and gas infrastructure.
Reacting to the development, the Flag Officer Commanding Central Naval Command, Rear Admiral SD Ibrahim, commended the Commanding Officer of FOB FORMOSO, Captain SK Haruna, for the successful operation.
He urged the base to sustain its offensive against economic saboteurs in line with efforts to boost the nation’s crude oil production and maintain maritime security.
Meanwhile, an officer sustained a gunshot wound to the right leg during the operation. The injured officer has since received medical treatment and is reported to be in stable condition.
