The FCT Police Command has arrested a 27-year-old woman, Precious Yohanna, over the alleged killing of her newborn baby in the Jabi area of Abuja.

The command said the incident was reported on October 4, 2026, after a distress call was received at about 10:30 p.m. over the discovery of an abandoned baby in a bush in the area.

According to the police, operatives from the Jabi Division were immediately deployed to the scene, where they recovered the lifeless body of a male infant with deep wounds on the throat and abdomen.

The baby was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was confirmed dead.

The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, disclosed this in a statement issued to journalists on Wednesday.

Adeh said following the discovery, the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, directed operatives to launch a manhunt for the person responsible.

She said the suspect was subsequently traced and arrested with the assistance of members of the community.

The suspect, identified as Yohanna, is a native of Riyam in Sanga Local Government Area of Kaduna State and resides in the Daki-Biu/Jabi area of Abuja.

Police investigations, according to Adeh, revealed that the suspect allegedly gave birth to the baby inside her room on October 3, 2026, at about 4:00 p.m.

She was alleged to have used a razor blade to inflict injuries on the newborn before abandoning the body in a nearby bush.

The police spokesperson said the suspect allegedly admitted to the crime, claiming that she acted out of hatred for the child’s father.

Reacting to the incident, Sanusi condemned the alleged killing, describing it as a serious violation of the sanctity of human life.

He also commended residents who assisted the police in tracing and arresting the suspect.

The commissioner assured that the command would conduct a thorough investigation into the incident, adding that the suspect would be charged to court after the conclusion of the investigation.

The command urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons or activities to the nearest police station.
