The House of Representatives descended into a rowdy session yesterday as lawmakers engaged in a heated debate over a motion addressing the delayed funding of constituency projects.
The motion, sponsored by Hon. Alex Mascot Ikwechegh (LP – Abia), urged the Federal Government to address the persistent non-funding of constituency projects.
During deliberations, some lawmakers sought to expand the motion by proposing that President Bola Tinubu be invited to explain the delays.
Another member also suggested that the House suspend plenary for one week until the funding issue was resolved.
The proposals sparked intense debate on the floor of the chamber.
Yusuf Gagdi (APC – Plateau) opposed both suggestions, arguing that the implementation and funding of constituency projects fall under the responsibility of the relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs not the President directly.
He also dismissed the call to suspend legislative activities, describing it as unnecessary.
His remarks triggered sharp reactions from some lawmakers, leading to shouting matches and disorder in the chamber.
As tensions mounted, Speaker, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas stepped in and called for a vote to determine the House’s position.
He subsequently ruled the proposal to invite President Tinubu out of order, explaining that it was not part of the original motion moved by Hon. Ikwechegh.
