The Guosa Language Community at Yakubu Gowon University, formerly the University of Abuja, has inaugurated a new set of student executives, marking another milestone in its campaign to promote the Guosa language as a unifying indigenous lingua franca for Nigeria and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
The handover and inauguration ceremony, held on Wednesday, July 28, 2026, brought together students and members of the community to witness the formal transition of leadership from the outgoing executives to a newly appointed team.
The event, presided over by the Community’s Matron, Ambassador Lilian Uju, featured the official handover of responsibilities and the swearing-in of the fourth set of executives who will steer the affairs of the association.
Guosa is a modern Pan-Nigerian and ECOWAS indigenous zonal lingua franca created by Prof. Alex G. Igbineweka, the Guosa Language Evolutionist and Creator. The language was developed to foster national unity, simplify communication across Nigeria and West Africa, and strengthen cultural identity by blending elements of major Nigerian and ECOWAS languages into an easy-to-learn common language.
The Guosa Language Community was established to preserve indigenous culture, encourage communication across ethnic and regional divides, and promote a shared identity for future generations.
Speaking during the ceremony, the outgoing President of the community, Mr. Thomas Matthew Abgatta, commended members of his executive council for their dedication, sacrifices and commitment to advancing research, documentation and awareness of the Guosa language.
He said the outgoing administration remained focused on service, unity and the vision of making Guosa Nigeria’s indigenous lingua franca for peace, national integration and mutual understanding.
Matthew urged the incoming executives to consolidate on the achievements of the outgoing administration by remaining committed to the ideals of the association.
“As we hand over today, we leave behind not just positions but a legacy of continuity, innovation and deeper commitment to the Guosa Project,” he said.
The newly inaugurated President, Miss Ruth Joseph, who spoke on behalf of the new executive council, pledged to uphold the ideals of the Guosa Language Community with integrity and dedication.
She assured members that the new leadership would continue promoting Guosa as a language of national pride, unity, linguistic harmony and cultural integration across Nigeria and the ECOWAS sub-region.
The outgoing executive council comprised Thomas Matthew Abgatta (President), Precious Abba (Vice President), Omoha Pius Junior, popularly known as “Mr. Guosa” (Secretary), Isah Alhaji, Praise Ifeoluwa Oloidi, Okoh Christiana Owolona (Coordinator), Moboladale (Welfare), Badmus Waliyat Abidemi, Miss Guosa Language Community 2024 (Director of Social Services), Salawu Kudirat Omotolase (Director of Welfare), Adelakun Oluwadarasimi Ayokunnumi (Public Relations Officer), Oshagbemi Sandra Moyinoluwa (Organising Secretary), and Benedict Collete Chisom (PRO II).
The newly inaugurated executives include Ruth Joseph (President), Miss Bisong (Vice President), Peculiar (Secretary), Timmy (Coordinator), Funmi (Assistant Coordinator), Margret (Welfare), Miss Margret (Assistant Welfare), Nafisat Eniola (Public Relations Officer), God’swill (PRO II), Adewale (Director of Social Services I), and Timileyin (Director of Social Services II), among other officials.
The ceremony ended on a note of optimism as members expressed confidence that the new leadership would sustain the vision of the Guosa Language Community and further promote the language as a tool for national cohesion, cultural preservation and regional integration within Nigeria and ECOWAS.
