INEC launches self-service voter registration platform, extends CVR deadline to July 26

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has introduced a self-service online voter registration platform to make it easier for eligible Nigerians to register as voters.

The Commission also announced a two-week extension of the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, shifting the deadline from July 10 to July 26.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Nasarawa State, Mohammed Abubakar-Sadiq, disclosed this during a press briefing in Lafia. He explained that the online registration platform became operational on Wednesday through INEC’s CVR portal.

According to him, first-time voters can now begin and complete their registration process, including biometric capture, using their personal devices without visiting an INEC office. He added that the platform is equipped with identity verification and biometric validation technology to safeguard the integrity of the national register of voters.

However, Abubakar-Sadiq advised those seeking to transfer voting locations, replace lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), or complete an already-started physical registration to visit designated INEC centres.

He said the extension followed consultations with INEC state offices, political parties, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders, stressing that the move was to give more eligible Nigerians the opportunity to register ahead of future elections.

“The extension is to give more eligible Nigerians the opportunity to register ahead of future elections and ensure that no qualified voter is left out,” he said.

The REC recalled that the nationwide voter registration exercise began on August 18, 2025, and recorded high turnout across Nasarawa State, including participation by Persons Living with Disabilities (PLWDs).

He encouraged all eligible Nigerians who have not registered to take advantage of both the online platform and the extended deadline. Abubakar-Sadiq reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to conducting a transparent, inclusive, and technology-driven voter registration process, while thanking the media, political parties, civil society organisations, and security agencies for their support.
