KOGI State Government has ordered the immediate suspension of Echane Festival in Ebiraland following intelligence reports indicating potential threats to public peace, safety and security in parts of Kogi Central Senatorial District.
The decision, approved by Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, was announced in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr. Kingsley Femi Fanwo.
According to the statement, credible security reports suggested that activities associated with the festival could trigger disturbances capable of undermining law and order in the affected communities.
The government said the action became necessary to forestall possible breakdown of peace and protect lives and property, stressing that security considerations must take precedence over all other interests.
While acknowledging the cultural and historical significance of traditional festivals in preserving the rich cultural heritage of the people, the State Government maintained that safeguarding the lives of citizens remains its primary responsibility.
“The Governor has directed that the Echane Festival be suspended with immediate effect in view of security reports and the need to preserve law and order,” the statement said.
The government further directed all security agencies operating in the state to ensure strict enforcement of the directive and maintain vigilance across the affected areas.
It warned that any individual or group found organizing, participating in, or promoting activities connected with the suspended festival would be dealt with in accordance with the law.
Governor Ododo, according to the statement, remains committed to safeguarding lives and property and will continue to take proactive measures to sustain the peace and stability for which Kogi State is known.
The government also appealed to traditional rulers, community leaders, opinion leaders, youth groups and residents of the affected communities to cooperate fully with security agencies and support ongoing efforts to maintain harmony and public order.
Reaffirming its dedication to the safety and well-being of citizens, the government assured residents that all decisions relating to public gatherings and activities would continue to be guided by the overriding need to guarantee security and peaceful coexistence across the state.
