NIA promises to facilitate settlement claims for flood victims

By Kehinde Ibrahim, Lagos

THE Nigerian Insurers Association, NIA, has promised to facilitate settlement claims for individuals whose lives, properties and businesses were affected by the recent flooding in parts of Lagos State, urging them to promptly notify their insurance providers to commence the claims process for timely compensation.

The association said early notification of losses and the submission of relevant documentation would enable insurers to carry out assessments efficiently and ensure the prompt settlement of genuine claims in line with policy terms.

In a statement issued on Thursday in Lagos, the Chairperson of the NIA, Mrs. Ebelechukwu Nwachukwu expressed deep sympathy to individuals, families and businesses impacted by the devastating floods triggered by days of heavy rainfall across the state.

Nwachukwu, who is also the Managing Director of Rex Insurance Limited, said the association stands in solidarity with victims who suffered losses, including damage to homes, vehicles, business premises and other valuable assets, as well as those who lost loved ones during the disaster.

She noted that while preventive measures remain essential in mitigating the impact of flooding, natural disasters can still occur despite the best efforts of governments, communities and individuals. According to her, such incidents underscore the critical role of insurance in providing financial protection and supporting recovery after unforeseen events.

The NIA chairperson also stressed the importance of improved environmental sanitation, responsible waste management and the regular clearing of drainage channels as practical measures to reduce the frequency and severity of flooding in vulnerable communities.

She urged affected policyholders to immediately contact their insurance companies, brokers or licensed insurance agents to report losses and initiate the claims process without delay.

According to her, prompt notification, accompanied by the necessary supporting documents, will enable insurers to conduct proper assessments and accelerate the settlement of legitimate claims.

“The association assures the public that its member companies remain committed to providing professional support and ensuring the prompt settlement of all genuine claims in accordance with the terms and conditions of their insurance policies,” she said.

Nwachukwu further advised policyholders who require clarification or assistance with claims procedures to reach out to their insurers, insurance brokers, insurance agents or the Nigerian Insurers Association for guidance throughout the claims process.

She described insurance as a vital pillar of economic resilience, noting that it provides individuals, households and businesses with the financial support needed to recover more quickly from unexpected losses and disruptions.

With climate-related disasters such as flooding becoming increasingly frequent, she said maintaining adequate insurance coverage remains one of the most effective strategies for protecting assets and reducing the financial consequences of such events.

Reaffirming the industry’s commitment to policyholders, Nwachukwu said the Nigerian insurance sector remains dedicated to delivering financial relief through the prompt settlement of valid claims, while continuing to support customers in rebuilding their lives and businesses after disasters.
