The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of its former General Manager and Chief Executive, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, describing him as a distinguished elder statesman and a major figure in Nigeria’s trade facilitation sector.
Tukur, a renowned businessman and statesman, died on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at the age of 90.
He served as General Manager and Chief Executive of the NPA from 1975 to 1982, a period during which he played a significant role in the development of Nigeria’s maritime and trade facilitation activities.
The NPA Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, joined the Executive Governor of Adamawa State to receive the remains of the late business mogul.
In a statement signed by the NPA General Manager, Corporate Affairs, Ikechukwu Onyemekara, Dantsoho conveyed the authority’s condolences to Tukur’s family, the Federal Government and the people of Adamawa State.
“I will like to, on behalf of the entire Management and Staff of the NPA, express our profound condolences and deepest sympathies to his immediate family, the Federal Republic of Nigeria and indeed the good people of Adamawa State on the demise of a pillar of trade facilitation and an inspiration to many,” Dantsoho said.
The NPA described Tukur’s passing as a loss to the global trade facilitation community, noting his contributions to Nigeria’s maritime sector and his wider impact as an international businessman and elder statesman.
His death marks the end of a long public and business career that saw him occupy prominent positions and contribute to Nigeria’s economic and institutional development.
