Ohanaeze Ndigbo worldwide, apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation headquartered in South East Nigeria, has called on the Federal Government to treat with utmost seriousness the alleged threat to the life of former Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi.
In a statement issued by the Deputy President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, made available Friday, the group stated that any threat to the life of a Nigerian citizen, particularly a major political figure, should be treated as a matter of national security.
This is even as the organization maintained that allegations of threats to life must be supported with credible evidence and subjected to proper investigation rather than being used as instruments for political narratives or public manipulation.
While expressing concern over Obi’s claims, Ohanaeze urged the Federal Government, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to immediately provide adequate security for all presidential candidates, including Obi, as a demonstration of its commitment to democratic stability, peaceful political participation, and the safety of all Nigerians.
According to the organisation, threats to life should never be dismissed as mere political statements.
“If Mr. Obi’s concerns are genuine, the appropriate security agencies should conduct a thorough investigation, identify possible threats, and take the necessary preventive measures,” the statement said.
Ohanaeze also called on Obi to provide clarity and verifiable evidence regarding the alleged threats against him, arguing that such information would enable Nigerians to distinguish between genuine security concerns and political rhetoric ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The organisation noted that several opposition figures and political stakeholders are actively participating in the emerging 2027 political landscape, yet public attention has largely centred on Obi’s allegations.
“The responsibility of protecting citizens does not depend on political affiliation. Every presidential candidate, political leader, and Nigerian citizen deserves adequate security protection, especially at a time when insecurity remains a major national concern,” the statement added.
Ohanaeze further urged the Federal Government and relevant security agencies to ensure that Obi and other political figures receive appropriate security support, stressing that no political disagreement should ever result in threats to the life or safety of any Nigerian.
The organisation also advised Obi to take additional personal security precautions and avoid unnecessary exposure amid the country’s prevailing security challenges.
“Mr. Peter Obi should carefully review all aspects of his personal security, strengthen his protective arrangements, and continue to work with legitimate security institutions rather than relying solely on political interpretations of security matters,” the statement concluded.
