Osun vows zero tolerance for criminality, warns cultists, kidnappers

By Richard Akintade, Osogbo

The Osun State Government has reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy for criminality, warning cultists, kidnappers and their sponsors against threatening the peace and economic stability of the state.

The Special Adviser to Governor Ademola Adeleke on Security Matters, Barrister Samuel Ojo, gave the warning while briefing journalists after the State Security Council meeting held at the state secretariat.

The government and security service commanders condemned recent cult-related violence and street clashes in Osogbo, the state capital, and pledged to intensify efforts to restore law and order.

Ojo commended the commanders of various security agencies for their commitment, sacrifices and professionalism in protecting lives and property across the state.

He said recent developments required heightened vigilance and a coordinated response from security agencies and residents.

“I therefore urge all relevant security agencies to strengthen intelligence gathering on cult groups, their sponsors, meeting points, financiers and sources of weapons,” he said.

He also called on parents, community leaders, traditional rulers and members of the public to provide credible information to the appropriate authorities to help prevent crime and identify those responsible for criminal activities.

The security adviser expressed concern over violence arising from disputes and criminal activities around motor parks and garages, noting that recent incidents had shown how disagreements in transport environments could escalate into violence and loss of lives.

He said the state government had taken steps to restore order and improve the management of motor parks.

Ojo urged security agencies to maintain close surveillance around motor parks, garages and other identified crime-prone areas, stressing that all security operations must be conducted professionally and within the confines of the law.

He disclosed that Governor Adeleke had signed the Osun State Park Management Bill into law for immediate implementation across the state.

He consequently urged security agencies to remain alert to potential disturbances arising from the implementation of the law and developments around motor parks.

“I want us to send a clear message to criminals, cultists, kidnappers and their sponsors that Osun State will not provide a safe haven for criminality,” he said.

Ojo noted that Osun had long been recognised as a peaceful state, adding that although its reputation was under pressure, it could still be protected through collective efforts.

He expressed confidence that the commitment of security agencies, support of the state government and cooperation of residents would help contain emerging security threats and safeguard lives and property across the state.
