The Police Service Commission (PSC) has officially handed over 50,000 newly recruited police constables to the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) for training, marking a major step in the implementation of the Federal Government’s security reinforcement plan.
The handover ceremony, held on Thursday, was presided over by Commissioner I of the PSC, retired Justice Paul Galumje, according to a statement issued by the commission’s spokesperson, Torty Kalu.
Galumje said the recruitment exercise was conducted in line with the directive of President Bola Tinubu and in compliance with relevant statutory provisions. He commended the President for supporting the recruitment process and formally presented the successful candidates to the Nigeria Police Force for training at designated police colleges and other approved institutions across the country.
As part of the handover, Galumje also presented the detailed list of successful candidates, stored on a flash drive, to police authorities.
Receiving the recruits on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, Deputy Inspector-General Isyaku Mohammed, who heads the Force Training and Development Department, praised the PSC for conducting what he described as a transparent and credible recruitment exercise. Mohammed assured that training for the new constables would begin simultaneously nationwide once the necessary funding is released. “The training will commence nationwide as soon as funds are released,” he said.
Also speaking, the Director of the Police Service Department at the Ministry of Police Affairs, Ibrahim A. Muhammad, described the recruitment exercise as transparent and credible.
The Secretary to the PSC, Onyemuche Nnamani, attributed the successful completion of the exercise to effective collaboration among all stakeholders. He expressed satisfaction with the outcome, saying it reflected strong teamwork throughout the recruitment process.
President Bola Tinubu declared a nationwide security emergency on November 26, 2025, and directed the recruitment of 50,000 additional police officers to strengthen security and combat rising insecurity across the country. The PSC opened its recruitment portal on December 15, 2025, and later extended the application deadline by two weeks to February 8, 2026, to allow more eligible applicants to apply. The recruitment exercise was completed approximately seven months after it commenced.
