Public servants begin 3-day warning strike October 2

By Michael Oche

The Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC) has declared a three-day warning strike by public servants across the country, beginning from midnight on Friday, October 2, 2026.

The council directed workers in the federal, state and local government services to join the industrial action, saying the decision followed the failure of the Federal Government to address its demands contained in a letter dated September 21, 2026.

In a circular signed by the National Secretary of the JNPSNC, Comrade Olowoyo Gbenga, the council said the warning strike would run from midnight on Friday, October 2, to Sunday, October 4, 2026.

The directive was addressed to national presidents and general secretaries, as well as state chairmen and secretaries of unions affiliated with the council.

The JNPSNC recalled that its national leadership had earlier resolved to embark on the three-day warning strike if President Bola Ahmed Tinubu failed to respond to the issues raised in its September 21 letter.

“Consequent upon the above, the strike shall start with effect from midnight of Friday 2nd October, 2026 to Sunday October 4th, 2026,” the circular stated.

The council urged all public servants across the three tiers of government to participate in the action, stressing that “an injury to one is an injury to all.”

It said the decision was also driven by what it described as worsening economic and mental hardships confronting workers, their dependants and vulnerable Nigerians.

According to the council, the current economic situation has become increasingly difficult for workers and other citizens to bear.

“The economic and mental hardships are becoming unbearable and frustrating,” it stated, while directing its affiliates to immediately mobilise their members for the three-day action.

The council further urged its leadership structures across the country to disseminate the strike directive and ensure that workers are adequately informed about the industrial action. The JNPSNC concluded the circular with the declaration: “Surely, there is victory for us!”
