Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Nigeria following his participation at the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union, AU, in Luanda, Angola.
Mr Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Office of the Vice President, made this known in a statement on Monday.
The Vice President represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the high-level continental meeting.
At the summit, Nigeria called for stronger African-led mechanisms for conflict prevention and resolution, and urged urgent continental action against recurring xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks on Africans and other nationals in South Africa.
Delivering Nigeria’s position, VP Shettima stressed that such attacks undermine African solidarity, unity and peaceful coexistence, and requested that the matter be placed on the agenda of the 40th Ordinary Session of the AU Assembly scheduled for January 2027.
Nigeria also threw its weight behind the Luanda Action Plan as a practical roadmap for strengthening conflict prevention across the continent.
The country further called for sustainable and predictable financing of Africa’s peace and security architecture, greater collective responsibility among AU member states, and increased African ownership of solutions to conflicts on the continent.
The Vice President returned to Abuja immediately after the conclusion of his engagements in Angola.
