One of the national leaders of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Hon. Leke Abejide who had strongly opposed the David Mark – led leadership of the party yesterday announced his decision to dump the party.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, Hon. Abejide citied protracted leadership crisis within the party as the primary reason for his decision.
He.described his exit as both “painful and inevitable,” noting that it was driven by the need to safeguard his political future and better position himself to deliver meaningful democratic dividends to his constituents in Yagba Federal Constituency of Kogi State.
The lawmaker, who currently represents Yagba Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, disclosed that he is set to align with what he termed a “mainstream political party,” although he did not immediately name the platform.
Speaking further, Hon. Abejide, who until recently served as the National Leader of the ADC, alleged that the party was unlawfully hijacked about nine months ago by political actors he described as individuals expelled from other parties due to their inability to manage internal affairs.
He maintained that the ensuing instability and uncertainty within the ADC compelled him to seek legal redress at the Federal High Court to assert his constitutional right to freedom of association.
Reflecting on his contributions to the party, Abejide stated that he played a pivotal role in building the ADC into a nationally recognized platform with representation at both the National and State Assembly levels.
He also revealed that he provided significant financial support to sustain the party during his tenure as National Leader.
The lawmaker added that he has now formally relinquished his leadership position to the current National Chairman, Nafiu Bala, while wishing him success in his ongoing legal battles.
According to Abejide, the founding vision of the party to establish a credible and nationally respected political platform was ultimately derailed by what he described as “party hijackers.”
“My fellow Nigerians, particularly my loyal supporters in Yagba Federal Constituency, Kogi State, and across the country and Diaspora, it has become necessary to address the lingering crisis within my former party, the ADC.
“After extensive consultations with political leaders, constituents, and stakeholders who share my vision aligned with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu I have resolved to chart a new political course.
“This decision was taken after deep reflection and prayerful consideration, guided by my faith. I am committed to continuing my progressive ideals on a more stable and viable platform.
“Contrary to recent claims that I was expelled on April 14, I wish to state unequivocally that I voluntarily withdrew my membership from the ADC in accordance with constitutional provisions”, he added.
Abejide reaffirmed his commitment to his constituents and the broader national interest, emphasizing that his next political move would be guided by the desire to enhance governance outcomes and contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s democratic development.
