The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the results of the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates.
Announcing the results in Lagos, Josiah Dangut, head of WAEC Nigeria, said 1,200,514 candidates, representing 61.54 percent, obtained credits and above in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, out of the 1,950,726 candidates who sat the examination.
The number of candidates who earned credits in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, fell by 1.42 percentage points compared with the 1,239,884 candidates, representing 62.96 percent, who achieved the same feat in the 2025 WASSCE.
Dangut said the results of 1,834,695 candidates, representing 94.05 percent, had been processed and released, while those of 116,031 candidates, representing 5.95 percent, were still being processed.
According to him, 1,213 candidates with special needs registered for the examination, including 137 visually impaired candidates, 491 with hearing impairments, 55 spastic and mentally challenged candidates, and 41 physically challenged candidates.
He added that the results of 167,486 candidates, representing 8.59 percent, were withheld over alleged examination malpractice.
Dangut said the figure was 1.11 percentage points lower than the 9.7 percent recorded in 2025.
He said the affected results were withheld over various infractions, including the growing use of mobile phones in examination halls despite the existing ban and organised cheating in some schools.
The WAEC official added that some supervisors and invigilators caught aiding candidates in examination malpractice had been arrested and would face disciplinary action through the relevant state ministries of education.
“The increasing use of cell phones in the examination hall, in spite of the existing ban, and organised cheating in some schools are other nagging issues,” Dangut said.
