Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has approved the constitution of an administrative investigative committee to probe the circumstances surrounding the death of a student of St. Louis College, Kano.
The announcement was made in a statement by his spokesperson, Sunusi Dawaki-Tofa, who said the committee will be chaired by the Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Ali Makoda. Other members include Aminu Hussain (Special Adviser on Justice and Constitutional Matters), Hamza Dantani, Abubakar Umar (Executive Secretary of the Private and Voluntary Institutions Management Board), Sunusi Dawakin-Tofa (DG, Media and Publicity), Ahmed Zubairu (representing private school proprietors), the PTA chairman of St. Louis College, and Hafsat Adhama (SSA on Girl Child Education) as secretary. Mrs. Binta Mukhtar, Under Secretary/REPA, will serve as assistant secretary.
The committee is tasked with conducting an independent investigation into the incident, establishing a timeline of events, and identifying lapses in supervision, welfare management, or institutional procedures. Its terms of reference include reviewing the events leading to the student’s death, examining medical records and reports, investigating the social environment within the college, and assessing allegations of bullying, coercion, or unauthorised disciplinary practices.
The panel will also evaluate complaints and reporting mechanisms, review staff compliance with supervision guidelines, and recommend reforms to disciplinary and boarding school management systems. In addition, it will propose measures to strengthen emergency medical response and student safety standards across schools in Kano State.
Governor Yusuf said his administration is committed to establishing the truth and preventing a recurrence. He directed members to carry out their assignments with fairness, diligence, and professionalism, and to submit their findings within the stipulated timeframe. NAN
