The Government Secondary School (GSS) Kwali Alumni Association has celebrated 44 years of academic excellence, growth and impact, while ushering in a new era with the election of its first democratically elected National Executive Council.
The anniversary highlighted the remarkable achievements of former students who have distinguished themselves across diverse professions in Nigeria and the diaspora, underscoring the school’s enduring legacy in human capital development.
A major highlight of the celebration was the election of the association’s inaugural National Executive Council, a milestone expected to strengthen unity among alumni, enhance networking opportunities, deepen engagement with members at home and abroad, and mobilise support for the continued development of their alma mater.
At the polls, Surveyor Abayomi Kayode Otitoju was elected National President, while Ike-Onuigbo Chinyere Gift, Clerk of the House of Representatives Committee on Safety Standards and Regulations, emerged as National Vice President.
Legal practitioner Ekpo Samuel was elected National Secretary, with Immaculate Unekwu Offor becoming Assistant National Secretary. Leonard James, a banker, was elected National Treasurer, while Aisha Mohammed Mundi emerged as National Financial Secretary.
Also elected were Ibrahim Shekwoduza as National Organising Secretary and Blessing Rufus as National Public Relations Officer.
Members of the association expressed confidence that the new executive would provide a stronger institutional framework for alumni engagement, promote networking across generations, and drive initiatives aimed at improving the academic and welfare needs of students of GSS Kwali.
Established in 1981, Government Secondary School Kwali has produced generations of graduates who have made significant contributions across various professions and sectors of the Nigerian economy. Over the past 44 years, the institution has built a reputation for producing leaders, professionals and changemakers who continue to make meaningful contributions both within Nigeria and internationally.
According to members of the association, the growing spread of alumni across different professions, states and countries created the need for a unified platform to reconnect former students and coordinate efforts towards supporting the school.
They recalled that while informal reunions among graduating sets had existed for years, discussions gained momentum in December 2019 on establishing a national body that would unite alumni from different generations under one umbrella.
Those efforts eventually led to the formation of the Government Secondary School Kwali Old Students Association (GOSSKWOSA), with the election of its first democratically elected National Executive Council in 2026 marking another significant milestone in the association’s evolution.
The association said its vision is anchored on the principle: “Unite the past, empower the present, and build the future of GSS Kwali.”
It explained that its mission is to foster a united and impactful alumni community capable of giving back to the school while creating opportunities, networks and support systems that enable members to thrive professionally and socially.
The alumni body also aims to reconnect graduates from all sets, regardless of their profession or location, while leveraging the collective expertise, influence and resources of members to support the school’s development, promote academic excellence and contribute to students’ welfare.
Beyond institutional support, the association intends to strengthen professional relationships among members through mentorship, collaboration, networking and mutual support initiatives.
The alumni expressed optimism that the emergence of the new national leadership would usher in greater coordination, inclusiveness and active participation among former students while reinforcing ties between the alumni community and GSS Kwali.
They also urged all former students who are yet to identify with the association to join the initiative and contribute their knowledge, experience and resources towards building a stronger alumni body and advancing the continued development of the school.
Reaffirming its commitment, the association pledged to preserve the legacy and values of GSS Kwali while supporting initiatives that will ensure the institution continues to produce future generations of graduates capable of making meaningful contributions to national development.
