A Nigerian Army personnel and a police officer paid the supreme price as troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA successfully foiled a terrorist attack on a Forward Operating Base in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
The Army also said nine civilians abducted during the attack were rescued after troops pursued the fleeing terrorists.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, 8 Division/Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Lt. Col. Olaniyi Osoba, said the terrorists attempted to infiltrate the FOB at Kasuwan Daji at about 1:40 a.m. on August 2, 2026, under the cover of darkness.
According to the statement, troops detected the movement and responded with coordinated firepower, inflicting heavy casualties on the attackers and forcing them to retreat.
“The successful defence of the base resulted in heavy casualties for the attackers, forcing them to retreat in disarray, and led to the rescue of nine abducted civilians,” the statement said.
Osoba said reinforcements arrived shortly after the initial gun battle and launched a hot pursuit of the fleeing terrorists, who had abducted an unspecified number of residents from nearby communities during the attack.
“The relentless pursuit by the troops led to the rescue of nine abducted locals, who were safely recovered,” he added.
The Army confirmed that one soldier and one police officer were killed during the firefight, while two other soldiers sustained gunshot wounds.
The injured personnel were evacuated by air for advanced medical treatment and are in stable condition, the statement said.
Osoba added that troops had secured and dominated the area and were conducting exploitation operations to determine the full extent of the terrorists’ losses and ensure the safety of surrounding communities.
The Army also dismissed reports circulating online claiming that six security personnel were killed in the attack.
“Contrary to rumours circulating online that six personnel died, it is worthy to mention that only one Army officer and a policeman paid the supreme price,” the statement said.
Describing the failed attack as another setback for terrorist groups operating in the North-West, the Army reaffirmed its commitment to ongoing offensive operations.
“Operation FANSAN YAMMA remains resolute in its commitment to sustaining offensive operations, protecting vulnerable communities, and dismantling terrorist networks until lasting peace and security are fully restored across the North West,” the statement added
