Minister of the federal capital territory FCT, Nyesom Wike, has unveiled plans to redevelop the abandoned recreation park at the Life Camp Roundabout into a world-class leisure and sporting facility as part of efforts to expand green and recreational spaces across Abuja.
Wike disclosed this on Monday after inspecting the site, saying the project was inspired by the success of the remodelled Abuja City Gate, which has become a major attraction since its commissioning.
He noted that the recent commendation by the office of the first lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, under the Renewed Hope Initiative’s Green Nigeria Challenge had further encouraged the FCT Administration to invest in more public recreational facilities.
The minister described the neglect of the Life Camp park as unfortunate, saying previous administrations failed to harness its enormous potential despite its strategic location and natural landscape.
He said the redeveloped facility would feature modern sporting and relaxation amenities where residents could exercise, unwind, take photographs and spend quality time with family and friends in a secure environment.
Wike directed relevant FCT officials to immediately begin work on a new design for the park, stressing that the project would be handled as an emergency to fast-track its delivery.
He also announced plans to introduce an annual new year fireworks display at the Abuja City Gate from this year, saying the initiative would place the nation’s capital alongside other major cities around the world that celebrate the beginning of each year with spectacular fireworks.
The minister assured residents that only the best design would be adopted for the Life Camp project, adding that reputable firms would be invited to submit proposals to ensure the facility meets international standards.
He reiterated the FCT Administration’s commitment to improving the quality of life of residents through investments in parks, green areas and other public infrastructure in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
